Tanika Ray's Hair

Have you ever taken the time to consider the towering inferno that is Tanika Ray's hair? Her flaming red curls are unmistakable. I have always wondered about the new heights that her hair always seems to reach. I think we have similar hair textures, but my hair never seemed quite so... springy. A quick Google search revealed others have asked how to get the look, but there didn't appear to be a whole lot of answers. I fancy myself a skilled wig/weave watcher, so I never doubted the authencity of her hair. But leave it to Barbara Walters' investigative reporting to verify Tanika's hair is real.

Tanika is my kind of wash-n-go girl. So how do you create your own voluminous naturally curly Tanika Ray inspired 'do? Well first, start out with a perfectly sculpted layered cut (or if you're like me and cannot find a skilled hair stylist in your area to perfectly sculpt your tight natural curls in the most inspired of layered cuts... start with the best layered cut your inexperienced stylist can give you for $20). Second, wash and thoroughly condition. Third, apply volume boosting styling aid to wet hair. This step is crucial. Any old aloe vera gel simply will not do. I've discovered that Miss Jessie's Curly Meringue pumps the volume up in my hair. But be warned! Your hair will be large and in charge and will only get bigger with each passing day.

I used the Curly Meringue for a slightly damp wash-n-go that I wore to church and by the next day, my hair had doubled in size. I wore this huge hair to work and when my supervisor stopped by my office, I found him talking to my hair more than he was actually talking to me. CM is great for those wash-n-go days where you have to be out and about with wet/damp hair and don't want that wet floppy look.

Is your hair natural, but not exactly curly? Don't fret, you can pull off a Tanika Ray 'do too! Her hair appears to be a twist-out in the above picture and you can also use Curly Meringue to do springy twist-out. Two strand twist with Curly Meringue, undo the twists when your hair is completely dry and then fluff the roots with a comb.

The one thing I love the most about Tanika's fabulous 'do is the fearlessness. She owns her fro if she's reporting on entertainment news, hitting the red carpet, or just casual out and about. Whether you rock a big fluffy 'do like Tanika or have your own signature hair style, don't be afraid to take your own hair all the way.

I adore Tanika's hair, but always wondered if it was a weave. I'm glad to learn that it is in fact, not. And if it is, she's rocking the heck out of it!

I love her hair and was praying it was a wig or weave so I could get one4!! My hair is too straight to get it like that even if I braid it first. Her hair is beautiful.

I saw that ep when Tanika was on View. TR is lying. She may have a curly afro but she is wearing pieces. I wish she hadnt lied.

Also, it was EXTREMELY RUDE the way BW was touching her hair like TR was a dog. That is so disrespectful. It reminded me of that scene in Colour Purple where Missus told Sophia
"your children are so clean! Would you like 2 clean my house?" If I were Sophia I woulda been angry as well!

I am always disgusted by the constant barrage of questions/comments I get about my hair.."how did you do that?" - I think it is rude period. But they know better than to touch me! I totally get The Color Purple vibe. Obviously Tanika's hair is not completely authentic...she never wears it off her face. I still think it looks great though!

I wear my hair like this most of the time. I use Jazz water hair. Which is synthetic but when you get done you brush it out with a weave brush to the level you want the coils loose. It ends up looking exactly like this. I usually have my jazz water sent to me from atlanta

Some people are very rude. Tanika's hair is all real. Check out the sistas on the new Black Pantene add. Their hair is all real too! I've had people come up to me and touch my hair & I almost broke their fingers off. It's sad that Black people don't believe Black people can have anything real. It's jealousy of our own folks....sad.

I SAW THE SAME EP ON THE VIEW WHEN BARBARA WALTERS PULLED TANIKA RAY'S HAIR. TR SHOULD HAVE SLAPPED THE SHIT OUT OF BARBARA. I DON'T SEE BARBARA PULLING ON ANY WHITE PERSONS HAIR ON HER "VIEW". THAT WAS SO DISREPECTFUL. I TO GO THROUGH THE IGNORANT QUESTIONS REGARDING MY HAIR. IF YOU HAVE SHORT NAPPY HAIR NO ONE CARES. GOD FORBID IF YOUR HAIR IS WAVY, CURLY AND LONG SANS CHEMICALS. IF BLACK PEOPLE PUT MORE ENERGY INTO THEIR EDUCATION AND HEALTH INSTEAD OF EACH OTHER'S HAIR, WE MIGHT HAVE HAD A BLACK PRESIDENT IN THE WHITE HOUSE SOONER.

I understand what you're trying to say, but it doesn't necessarily read that way. It sounds like a bigoted generalization about African Americans. Imagine hearing this statement from anyone else. We'd all be picketing in the streets.

That is her hair. People always tell me that my hair is fake or that I have pieces added in. I have so much hair on my head naturally that I would never need to add pieces, some people just have extra thick hair and when you don't chemically relax you can really see how thick black women's hair can be. Look at my profile pic on myspace to get an idea of what I'm talking about: http://www.myspace.com/dawnhewittdesigns. (copy and paste into browser)

It is very possible that all "the hair" is hers. I have all natural hair. It's

been all natural for 15 years after getting relaxed her cut off. My hair

is very very thick and very long. I do have my hair straighten out with

the good ol' straightening comb at times by my hair stylist. This

reveals the length even more. I have also worn my hair out in its

natural krinkly, curly, & kink like state. I get compliments from whites

and blacks. Only our brothas and sistahs are brave enough to ask if my hair is all mine. I have also worn a weave on occassions. When wearing a weave my hair is totally in corn rows and the fake curly crinkle fro is sewn in. Why do I wear a weave? Wearing the weave at times is just for the change in hair color and easy maintenance. The weave's length is shorty than my own hair and I have never been questioned if it, the weave, is all mine.

It's not her hair. I've been wearing a full head weave since 1997 and I've worn this type of hair in the past (Natural Wave or Water Wave). It's quite professional and very nice but it's not her hair.
